From the simple text-based site of old to the multi-media rich sites of today that are so elegant and interactive, web design has certainly advanced substantially. People have experienced a huge dependency on the Internet for business and for pleasure. It’s natural that websites would want to add even more interactivity to be more engaging to their visitors.

The dependency on websites even has a huge impact on the languages we use for developing our web pages. Today we have popular languages such as PHP, Java, ASP, HTML/CSS, and Perl, and these have all evolved quite a lot. They are stronger than ever and support a lot more interactivity. To sum it up we should take a minute to consider what adds up to a desirable site? What elements should web designers be aware of in order to design great sites? There are many elements involved with web design but for simplicity we will cover these main four:

1 – Image & Rich Media

2 – Color Combination

3 – Styling

4 – Layout & Structure

As stated before this standard has evolved quite a bit over time. Today we can see many sites that are enriched with slide-shows, high definition images, audios, videos, and banners. That said, there are also some that represent a clean and simplistic style. The use of images along with multi-media will mostly depend on the goal of your website. To design a site aimed at entertainment would definitely call for rich media and images, but one designed for a social organization calls for something with a simplistic feel.

Color Combination – This is probably about the second most important aspect of design because it carries the look and the feel of your entire page. Traditionally each color sets a specific feel or type of recognition. Green is preferred by organization engaging in products/services that are environmentally friendly. Pink always defines femininity. Red is robust while yellow will signify classified businesses or advertisement.

Styling – This refers to how you use a stylesheet and related elements for your web design. You cannot design a web page to perfection and not use stylesheets. This is the soul of web design. Using styling intelligently adds life to even a dull and boring web design. Today we are able to use HTML5 and CSS3 for styling our web pages. These have a broad scope and could even replace Flash when used properly.

Layout and Structure – This is without a doubt one of the top elements for web design. This is basically how the various elements on your pages get placed. Creating a sketch of your layout and then getting an approval from your client is a smart move. You need to ask questions like: “where will I keep the navigation?” “Where should the contact form go?” “How many columns on my pages?”

If a designer focuses on the four main elements for web design, their site is bound to meet with client expectations.
